Our History

Methodism dates back to 1736 and the leadership of John and Charles Wesley.United Methodists share a historic connection to other Methodist and Wesleyan bodies.

Throughout the 1800’s conference records indicate an active history of Selmer Methodists who sometimes met in private homes, downtown stores, or even the Courthouse for Sunday School and worship services. From 1896 until 1927, the Methodist worshipped in a one room brick building located at the corner of Court Avenue and 6th street. In 1927, that building torn down to make way for a new brick building with a basement to house the Sunday School classes.

On May 1, 1972, a service of deconsecrating was held at the Court Avenue building, and one hour later, a service of consecration was held at the new church building on Highway 64 West. Today the church family is very proud of the beautiful facilities, yet they are most proud of the programs, traditions, and the many ministries and missions of the church.
